ARDENNES · SINCE THE 11TH CENTURY

One Castle, a Thousand Stories

One of the most important surviving medieval fortifications in the Ardennes. A fortress designed for artillery warfare, with five-metre-thick walls, casemates, a barbican, and countless stories hidden within its stones.

1446 · THE HOUSE OF CROŸ

The Splendour of a Fortress

Antoine de Croÿ, Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece, purchased Montcornet and transformed it into a cutting-edge fortress: a fifty-metre-long mass of stone, three colossal towers, and walls rising twenty metres high.

The castle became one of the major political and cultural centres of the Ardennes, supported by eleven fortified manor houses.

THE AGE OF CANNONS

Built for Gunpowder

As artillery emerged, the castle’s walls were reinforced to a thickness of up to five metres. Casemates, covered passageways, and gunports created a defensive system with no blind spots.

A unique example of how medieval fortifications adapted to the revolutionary weapon of gunpowder.

1961 · A NEW BEGINNING

A Fortress Reborn

Dismantled during the 18th century and later swallowed by brambles, the castle was brought back to life thanks to Abbé Bernard Lussigny and dedicated volunteers, who cleared the site, consolidated the ruins, and reopened it to visitors.
